Green Infrastructure

Camden SMART Initiative

Stormwater Management and Resource Training

The Camden County MUA and its green infrastructure partners, Rutgers University, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, City of Camden, New Jersey Tree Foundation and Cooper’s Ferry Partnership, have completed the first year of the Camden City green infrastructure plan. In that time, the six partners have, collectively, installed 11 new rain gardens and obtained a $300,000 grant from the State of New Jersey to build 24 more rain gardens. The purpose of the project is to capture stormwater through the rain gardens and thereby:

  • reduce flow to the CCMUA’s wastewater treatment plant
  • reduce the potential for sewage flow being released to the Delaware River during rain events
  • reduce the potential for flooding of homes, streets and parks with raw sewage during rain events
