GI#19 Revised 5/25/2018
The Urban Promise Academy rain garden, located
in the Rosedale/East Camden neighborhood, was
installed to intercept, treat, and infiltrate stormwater
runoff from a portion of the school's roof. The rain garden also helps to mitigate nuisance flooding in
the area and to reduce nonpoint source pollution and stormwater that would otherwise discharge into
the City of Camden’s combined sewer system. This rain garden manages stormwater runoff from a
portion of the school building's roof via two redirected downspouts. The rain garden was excavated
by using a skid steerer to remove the top layer of sod, and then shovels were used to reach the
appropriate depth. Two downspouts that were originally directed to the lawn were redirected to the
rain garden to serve as the inlets. A three inch layer of mulch was spread throughout the rain garden
to help thwart weeds. Plants in this rain garden include: Black-eyed Susan, Beebalm, New England
Aster, Purple Coneflower, etc. This rain garden captures 22,500 gallons of stormwater per year. This
project was initially completed in May 2013 with a rubble border being added to the rain garden in
April 2018.
