GI#7 Revised 5/25/2018
The Dr. Charles E. Brimm Medical Arts High School rain garden,
located in the Whitman Park neighborrhood, was installed to
intercept, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff from a portion of
the facility's roof. This rain garden was installed to serve as a
demonstration and an outdoor classroom for the staff, students,
and visitors of the Brimm High School. This rain garden also
helps to mitigate nuisance flooding in the area and reduces
nonpoint source pollution and stormwater that would otherwise
discharge into the City of Camden’s combined sewer system. This rain garden manages stormwater
runoff from the roof and is connected to the garden via a downspout. The rain garden, with a drainage
area of approximately 3,200 square feet, is 6 inches in depth, 650 square feet in area, and disconnects
rooftop runoff from directly discharging into the CSO system. Coarse sand and compost were mixed
into the native soil to help improve drainage and the quality of the soil. Before the rain garden was
installed, depaving occurred (i.e., a portion of blacktop was removed). The rain garden is planted with
native plants such as Purple Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, and Cardinal Flower. In conjunction with
the Water Resources Program's Stormwater Management in Your Schoolyard educational program,
Students also help with planting this rain garden. The rain garden captures 81,000 gallons of
stormwater per year. The project was completed in May 2012 with a rubble border being added to the
rain garden in October 2017.
